Geocache Description:

This is my first cache in a series of Historic Houses in San Diego County.

Collier Park, the site of the original La Mesa Springs, was named for Colonel David Charles Collier, a distinguished San Diego citizen and early La Mesa developer. Collier is perhaps best known for organizing the Panama-California Exposition at San Diego in 1915.

The natural springs rising at this site first made it a seasonal stopping place for the Kumeyaay. By the 1860s, when rancher Robert Allison owned most of the southern part of La Mesa, his family used the springs to water their herds of sheep. Colonel Collier’s 1905 land purchase included the springs; by 1907 he had established a bottling works (known today as the Spring House) on the site. Collier donated a portion of what is now Collier Park for public use in 1910. By 1920 the City was officially developing the site for use as a municipal park, complete with a swimming pool and restrooms. The swimming pool is no longer in existence.

Come and enjoy a bit of La Mesa history. Pack a picnic and meet me on the court for a doubles set.
