This is a popular walkway that takes you out to view the Whangapoua/Matarangi Bar (Opera Point). Walkway is well defined with some steps and a short steep part to the first beach then it’s a sand trail from there. Not suitable for pushchairs/strollers or bikes.
The turnoff to Whangapoua is off Highway 25 from Coromandel Town on the way to Matarangi, Kuaotunu and Whitianga.
The Ruakawa pa site on Opera Point Historic Reserve offers excellent coastal views. The walking track follows an old tramway from the car park to a pleasant beach and the site of Craig’s saw mill, built in 1862.
Occasionally fur seals can be seen basking on rocks around the seaward side of Opera Point.
On reaching the first beach look to the left for the track that takes you directly across the headland rather than going all the way around. Although if you want the longer walk around the headland feel free to go that way.
Whangapoua/Matarangi Bar can be quite a treacherous piece of water. A lot of care is needed to cross the bar. There has been a number of capsizes on this bar. The surrounding beach area is a popular place for people with families to enjoy the calmer waters of the inner harbour for children to swim and play. Further round the point are good places to finding shellfish mussels/pipis can still be gathered in plentiful (but legal) amounts. There are also land nesting birds (Dotterels and Oyster Catchers)and the nesting areas are roped off. The birds will let you know if you are getting too close!!
