Two Hundred EightySeventh in the Famous People (FP) Series - Peter Boyle
Peter Boyle first came to the public’s attention more than a quarter century before, in the critically acclaimed “Joe.” He met his wife, Loraine Alterman, on the set of “Young Frankenstein” when she visited as a reporter for Rolling Stone magazine and Boyle, still in monster makeup, asked her for a date.
Through his wife, a friend of Yoko Ono, the actor became close friends with John Lennon. “We were both seekers after a truth, looking for a quick way to enlightenment,” Boyle once said of Lennon, who was best man at his wedding.
Briefly typecast in tough, irate roles, Boyle began to escape the image as Robert Redford’s campaign manager in “The Candidate” and left it behind entirely after “Young Frankenstein,” Mel Brooks’ 1974 send-up of horror films. The latter movie’s defining moment came when Gene Wilder, as scientist Frederick Frankenstein, introduced his creation to an upscale audience. Boyle, decked out in tails, performed a song-and-dance routine to the Irving Berlin classic “Puttin’ On the Ritz.”
And of course, I just have to get this plug in. He also played the father of Sandra Bullock's fiancee in the 1995 movie While You Were Sleeping. Also at this time I might as well mention that the Boyle Cemetery is a small plot along the side of HIghway 34 which can be busy at times. Best parking is in the nearby car wash, and you will only be just a few feet from the camoed bison tube that hangs on a limb near the outer edge of a juniper tree.
His character Frank Barone, in the 10 year series Everybody Loves Raymond, was a curmudgeon whose favorite expression was "Holy crap," When he tried out for Raymond in 1996, his agitation over arriving late to the audition helped him nail the part. "I was ready to pop," Boyle recalled. "I didn't plan it that way, but I was just like Frank when I walked in."
On December 12, 2006, Boyle died in New York City
On October 18, 2007, which would have been Boyle's 72nd birthday, his friend Bruce Springsteen, during a Madison Square Garden concert with the E Street Band in New York, dedicated "Meeting Across the River", segueing into "Jungleland", in memory of Boyle, stating: "An old friend passed away a while back — we met him when we first came to New York City... Today would have been his birthday."
