Geocache Description:

Two Hundred NinetyEighth in the Famous People (FP) Series - George Wallace

George Corley Wallace Jr. (August 25, 1919 – September 13, 1998), was a Governor of Alabama for four terms (1963–1967, 1971–1979 and 1983–1987).

In November of 1963, in the City of Dallas, Texas, George C. Wallace announced that he had intended to challenge John F. Kennedy for the Democratic Party's nomination as candidate for U.S. President for the November 1964 general election. He did run for his party's nomination, of course not against JFK, but still did not get very much support.

Then in 1966, he couldn't run again for the goverenor's office due to a legal restriction, so he got his wife to run and she won. But she died in office on May 7, 1968.

George was again attempting to make a presidential run in 1968 as the American Independent Party candidate. We ran against Nixon and Hubert Humphrey and again didn't really do so well.

So, in 1972, he gave it another shot (no pun intended). While campaigning in Laurel, Maryland, he was shot 4 times by Arthur Bremer and left paralyzed from the waist down. Bremer was sentenced to 53 years in prison, served 35 of them and was released on parole in November of 2007. He still managed a strong campaign, but lost to George McGovern who eventually lost the presidential election to Richard Nixon.

Guess what happened in 1976? That's right, he once again tried for the Democratic party's candidacy, and once again, he failed. So back to the Governor's mansion he went in 1983 for a record 4th term.

Rosemound Cemetery is a large area in the city of Commerce. A scuba tank bison tube found a nice home in the back area far away from the madding crowd. Enjoy the peacefulness of this location and respect those laid to rest here.
