Geocache Description:

“Michigan Spirit Quest”

The Michigan Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by MICHIGAN Pioneers. This series is inspired by and is a continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by SixDogTeam. In just over four years, the SPIRIT QUEST has grown to over seven hundred caches and the hiders have grown to fifty cacher teams in 5 states and one province, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 20,000 finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

Michigan Spirit Quest #30

"Waldron & The C.N.R.R."

This cache is placed in the Waldron Cemetery, which used to be bordered along it's western border by the Cincinnati Northern Railroad.

>

In January of 1887, the first passenger trail passed through Waldron, Michigan. Located at CN milepost 39.5 (from it's terminus at Jackson), the depot was visited twice weekly. Waldron had a 34 car length siding and the station was equipped to handle 3 double deck stock cars with watering and weighing facilities. An elevator, owned by the United Grain & Fuel Company (whose facilties still are currently used and operated), had a 4,500 bushel capacity.

The railline through Waldron was originally built by the Cincinnati, Jackson and Mackinaw Railroad from Addison, MI to the Carlisle OH, through buying the Paulding and Cecil Railway. After buying some railroads, and acquiring trackage rights to others in southern Michigan and western Ohio, in was reorganized as the Cincinnati Northern Railroad.

The original CNRR depot still stands, and is currently in use. It can be seen clearly from the cache location, and with the silos and freight station just north of it, you can clearly see how Waldron looked back when the railroad and the town was in it's heyday.
