Trail or Bushwhack? Traditional Geocache

While attempting to cache in wooded areas you are often presented with a seemingly simple choice for how to approach a cache. Do you follow the trail (We tend to assume that the person who placed the cache probably followed the trail until they found a good hiding spot, true)? Or, do you follow that arrow on your GPS and bushwhack until it reads 0 feet (The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, right)?
The choice is yours for how to approach this cache. Both have their pro's and con's. The length of your walk and the level of terrain rating seem to be inversely proportional. The only way to know for sure that you've made the right choice is to find the cache and sign the log. I'll let you "guess" which I chose (As if someone might actually question which I chose... or my sanity).
