Geocache Description:

This is the first of a series of caches designed to point out the history that is abundant along US Route 11, also known as the Old Valley Pike.

The cache is located just outside New Market Battlefield State Historic Park in an area once known as The Bloody Cedars. Come find the cache and take a short walk to learn about the 54th Pennsylvania Regiment and its role in the Battle of New Market during the Civil War. To learn more about the Battle of New Market, drive over to the park's main entrance and explore the visitor's center and more of the battlefield. Interesting fact: It may seem a little odd to see a monument dedicated to a Northern regiment on a Southern battlefield -- the site of a Confederate victory, nonetheless. Well, until 1984, the monument was titled to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Cache notes: -- This cache is located near a busy road, so use caution. -- Parking is available in a southbound pull-off very close to the cache area. -- Another southbound pull-off is 0.22 miles south and gives a little more information about the Battle of New Market. (Don't forget to drive over to the visitor's center!) -- Neither the cache nor the nearby historical area accessed from the cache area are handicap accessible. -- Bring your own pen. -- Please be careful to return cache to exactly the location in which it was hidden. -- Cache container was a prize in a local CITO event last spring.
