The given reference for this
multi-cache is referred to as Waypoint 1 which is
at:
N 51° 19.831 W 000°
49.062
This is one of a number of
multi-caches based on Toby Dog’s favourite walking places in
around Yateley. Each takes up to around 45 minutes depending on how
many times Toby stops for a sniff or to play with his puppy-dog
pals. All are listed in my
Toby Dog’s Walks bookmark.
Wyndhams Pool is on Yateley
Common Country Park, an extensive
heathland complex with areas of open heather, gorse, birch and oak
woodland. The site is covered by a good network of paths and trails
with countless potential cache locations.
Only recently have the final
remnants of a diving board been removed from the damn in the
interests of safety. Sad really as the board was the final reminder
that the pool was once used for swimming by the people of
Yateley.
The pool is now popular with
Carp Anglers who enjoy a number of peaceful swims around the two
acre pond.
Winter visitors to the pool
may see an odd collection of footballs and empty plastic bottles
floating on the surface. This is not the random act of a bunch of
vandals. In summer months Blue-Green Algae forms on Wyndhams Pool
which can be harmful to dogs and wildlife. The plastic floating
items are anchored buoyancy aids that have been used to position
bales of Barley Straw that help to prevent the formation of
Blue-Green Algae.
Finding this small multi-cache
will take you to and around Wyndhams pool and then across the
common for a 45 minute circular walk. Alternatively, the distance
and bearing from each waypoint to the next is given if you’d
rather take a shorter walk from the first waypoint directly to the
cache. If you do follow the walk please keep to the paths. The
paths can be very muddy at times so good walking footwear may be
essential.
Waypoint 1
is at the entrance
to Heathlands Cemetery, one of a number of reasonable parking
places on Yateley Common Country Park.
You will need to look into
(but not go into) the cemetery to see a large plaque that tells you
that it was opened in the year ABCD. You can now plot Waypoint
2 by substituting the correct numbers for the letters in the
following:
N 51° AB.DB(A+C) W 000°
(C-A)B.(A+A)D(C-A)
If you prefer to work out the
plot Waypoint 2 is 254.75 metres from Waypoint 1 on a
bearing of 255.05 degrees.
Waypoint 2
is an information
board giving Anglers the Regulations for the use of Wyndhams Pool.
It gives two telephone numbers for enquiries. The first of the two
numbers is (EFGHI) JKLMNO. UPDATE - 15 May 2011. As the board is
missing at the moment the number you need from here is (01252)
874346. You can now plot Waypoint 3 by substituting the
correct numbers for the letters in the following:
N 51° AB.KEJ W 000°
LB.MGE
If you prefer to work out the
plot Waypoint 3 is 170.97 metres from Waypoint 2 on a
bearing of 198.26 degrees.
At Waypoint 3 you will
find a Hydrant or Water Valve (AV) marker post. The AV information
plate first tells you the Nominal Pipe Diameter, in this case
“P” and the distance to the valve which in this case is
1. “P” is greater than 1. You can now plot Waypoint
4 by substituting the correct number for the appropriate letter
in the following:
N 51° AB.HGP W 000°
LB.GJK
If you prefer to work out the
plot Waypoint 4 is 345.91 metres from Waypoint 3 on a
bearing of 173.64 degrees.
At Waypoint 4 you will
find a short Byway marker post. There are “R” blue
arrows on the post. You can now plot Waypoint 5 - the cache
location - by substituting the correct number for the appropriate
letter in the following:
N 51° AB.HO(R-G) W 000°
LB.EFO
If you prefer to work out the
plot Waypoint 5 - the cache location - is 321.85 metres from
Waypoint 4 on a bearing of 77.62 degrees.
The cache is a small
Tupperware pot in a camo bag. It was well concealed when first
placed as it is very close to a popular path. Once you’ve
logged your visit please take the time to make sure that it is not
visible from the path!
Original contents when placed:
logbook and pencil, mini photo frame, phone charm, mini torch key
ring, trolley token key ring, 50cm caching badge and 3 assorted
25cm caching badges.
