Geocache Description:

In preparation of publishing this cache, I did some research into the history of Centralia (visit link) There are so many things (like all of them) that I did not know. The town was founded by an African American man in the 1870’s named George Washington. He came west to escape discrimination. He also donated land for a city park, a cemetery, and a Baptist church. In the 1880’s, they and another family donated the land and the funds to build the Grace Seminary. The Seminary building was razed in 1938 but the area retained the name of Seminary Hill. Seminary Hill is now under the guidance of the Centralia Parks Department and is maintained by the Friends of Seminary Hill (visit link) The cache is placed along one of the trails on Seminary Hill.

While my main caching area is Bellingham, WA, the Chehalis/Centralia area is my second caching area where my cacher son and grandchildren live. I have been meaning to put out caches here for quite some time and today seemed like a good time. Why in this spot? I was out driving with the kids fulfilling a requirement for a challenge cache I am doing (GC1HWC1). I needed a photo of me hugging a maple and this maple seemed like a good choice! The cache is an ammo right next to the maple I hugged. Enjoy!

One more thing about the history, in the 1890’s hard times hit Centralia. Mr. Washington purchased food and other goods to give to the area residents. He also purchased their mortgages and held them until the owners could buy them back. I wonder if those types of acts of kindness will ever be seen again.
