Geocache Description:

The “Highway One” series of caches traces the path of old highways (mostly Highway One!).

It generally follows the old alignments of roads that were once used as our main thoroughfares throughout the country. These caches will take you down roads and tracks and through towns and settlements that the Main Roads Authorities of this country don’t want you to see for some reason. Some of the roads chosen are done so because of historical facts, street names or, deductions based on studying old maps has led me to believe that these roads are the original alignments. In some instances, some of these detours are simply taken because they are more interesting than the main road! Following this route, instead of bypassing some of the beautiful places this country has to offer, will be both interesting and enjoyable. Highway One – REDeX is placed near a site that was used as a passage control during the 1953 REDeX Around Australia Reliability Trial (won by Ken Tubman and navigator Tom Marshall in a Peugeot 203) and again in the 50th Anniversary re-run in 2003. This track forms part of the old Highway One – the section from Brisbane to Cairns being known as the Bruce Highway (named after the Hon. H. A. Bruce M. L. A., minister for Public Works on 15 December, 1934.) Happy caching. FTF honours go to Just a Trifle.
