Geocache Description:

Carmel by the Sea, Monterey by the Smell,
Pacific Grove by God!
Pacific Grove was originally founded as a Methodist-Episcopal retreat.

In the late 1800's part of what is now Pacific Grove was subdivided into 30 x 60 foot lots as tent sites. Many of the lots (like this one) had 12 x 24 foot wood floor, wood frame tents. The area was a church retreat.

Around the turn of the century (1900), many of the tents had been converted to cabins by adding 1 x 12 redwood vertical planks over the canvas. Strips of wood covered the cracks between boards (board and bat).

The house at the coordinates (142 18th) is a good example.

It was probably one of the later tents, placed in the last few years of the 1800's and covered with board and bat soon thereafter.

By 1904, a woman named Helen Campbell purchased the board and bat cabin. She added an angled front, an addition to the side, a large extension in the rear and even a narrow section at the very back, probably containing a bathroom (yes, indoor plumbing in 1904).

She continued to live in the house for many years until she died at an advanced age in 1932.

Later, half of the neighboring lot was aquired and used for the garage and driveway. Several porches with flat roofs were added and subsequently enclosed over the years in the right rear of the house.

The cache is placed on the property, but where you can reach it from the city sidewalk. It is placed with the permission of the owners. As you might have guessed, we own the house and it is our home.

We have replaced the "shed like" additions with structures in keeping with what Helen Campbell had built and are living in the house.

If we are here, please knock and say "hi".

The cache contains only a log. Bring your own writing stick!
