SideTracked - Wootton Bassett
How Geocaching Works
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
Wootton Bassett Station closed in 1966, however the line is still in use and runs from London to Swansea. This cache and dash is located near the old station. Network Rail workers still access the station regularly so be aware that there are often muggles about. The Beaufort Arms, the pub near the station is now closed and boarded up but you can park alongside.
About Side Tracked
We have Motorway Mayhem. We have A-Road anarchy. What about public transport users? Side Tracked caches are intended to provide a quick cache and dash at train stations.
Wootton Bassett Railway Station was originally used to transport milk from nearby farms to the London markets.
The station was closed in 1966 when Dr. Beeching reformed the railways. The station itself was demolished in 1972. There have been many proposals to reopen the station to help ease the road congestion around Swindon but to date nothing definite has been decided. The Beaufort Arms public house which is in the grounds of the old station is also closed.
Opposite the old station is the site old St. Ivel Dairy which close in 2003. The site is being redeveloped into a housing estate but you can see that the old brewery building ( which is a listed ) still remains. The Beaufort Brewery was originally set up to exploit the latest techniques and to run a school of scientific brewing.
This is micro cache so we advise visitors to bring their own pen/pencil. Stealth required as muggles are often about.
