Geocache Description:

Cache is not at the posted coordinates. Decon in an appropriately named park. Please re-hide it better than you found it by covering it with natural material. Be aware this can be a high muggle area, so be extremely stealthy.

William McKinley, Jr was the 25th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1897 to September 14, 1901. His presidency was highlighted by a "splendid little war", the Spanish-American War of 1898, which resulted in the U.S. annexing the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam from Spain. Hawaii was also added as a U.S. territory during his administration.


President William McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901 while attending the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. His assassin was arrested, tried and convicted of murder. Seconds before being electrocuted by 1700 volts, the anarchist's last words were "I killed the President because he was the enemy of the good people! I did it for the help of the good people, the working men of all countries!"

Since you're here anyway, spend a few minutes enjoying the park, the third oldest in Alameda. It opened in 1909 on the grounds of the Oak Shade estate after it's previous owner, James A. Waymire, was forced into foreclosure due to some bad investments. For almost three decades, the park preserved the ambiance of the lovely old estate, with the beautiful Maywire mansion serving as both community meeting place, as well as the residence for the superintendent of the city's parks. Not surprisingly, the luxurious garden and grounds were maintained impeccably. Due to changing tastes of the modern era, the impressive Victorian mansion and much of the garden were removed in 1937 to make room for the adjacent Thompson Field, the home of the Alameda High School football team.

Lastly, this park, as most of those in Alameda, is home to an after-school recreation program between the hours of 3-5pm on weekdays, so it you want to minimize the number of muggle kids nearby while you make the grab, don't come by at that time.
