Geocache Description:

Visit some of the last remaining WW2 coastal defences in Southend-on-sea.

This is an all abilities micro cache which I placed from my wheelchair whilst recovering from wounds received "in action" at the The Hadleigh Country Park event cache.

There's plenty of off road parking available nearby and it's close to the last remaining Anti-tank Cubes & Home Guard Observation Post along the seafront.

Anti-Tank Cubes.

The most extensive single defense work built at Southend during World War Two was the chain of anti-tank cubes which ran for over three miles along the seafront promenade immediately above the beach. There were 1,804 cubes in all, two of which still survive. The exact length is unknown however a survey conducted in 2001 concluded that it probably started at Chalkwell Railway Station and continued along the seafront to join up with the defences at Shoebury Common.

Home Guard Observation Post.

I know this sounds like a scene from Dad's Army but During World War Two, the gas works lay to the north of Eastern Esplanade and the only thing that survives today is the curved brick wall that once stood at the eastern corner of the entrance and if you look closely, it's hiding a Home Guard Observation Post.

No other Home Guard posts survive in Southend therefore this is a unique structure however, there are now plans to build a new hotel on the site so it must be under treat. I recommend you visit this little bit of history before it disappears for ever.

I've uploaded some photographs so you can see what you're looking for, happy hunting.
