Geocache Description:

Puzzle Cache consisting of Online and Visual Clues

Amersham Secrets

This is a puzzle cache which I have created to introduce people to some of the background and scenery that Old Amersham and Amersham on the Hill have to offer.

As this is a puzzle cache the above co-ordinates will not take you to the target, but rather to a car park which you can use as your starting point. The puzzle actually consists of two parts, firstly an online part which will have you trawling the web for answers - and hopefully learning a bit more about Amersham in the process.

The second part of this cache is visual whereby you will have to collect clues as you walk around - the challenge here is that there are no co-ordinates to follow, just a recommended starting point and a series of clues - however the clues are arranged logically and sequentially so you should be able to work out a good route between them - if you follow them in the order listed you will get the final piece of information close to the actual cache and can follow a loop back to your starting point.

Of course you could potentially work out the visual clues simply from Googling the answers, but where's the fun in that :)

Firstly here are the Online Clues:
- How many non-residential properties does the Amersham Telephone exchange serve - the first digit will give you A
- In what year did Christian Garbrand's Husband pass away - the third and fourth digits will give you B and C
- Until what year were the Rickmansworth to Amersham / Chesham train services powered by Steam - the last digit will give you D
- In what year was the following enclosure act passed regarding the Old Common: “And whereas the said open and common fields, common meadows, wastes and other commonable lands are in their present state incapable of any considerable improvements...” - the fourth digit will give you E
- What was the population in Amersham in 1801 - The fourth digit will give you F

This will give you the Lat in the form of: N EC AD.BFD
You can check your answer here (use W 000 36.800 for the Long)

Geochecker.com.

. . . and now the Visual Clues:
- In what year was the Market Square erected - the final digit will give you A
- In what year was ELMODESHAM recorded in the Doomsday Book - the final digit will give you B
- In what month did Clarice Ivy Pugh pass away - this will give you C
- Donated in the memory of Catherine May Caple - the second digit will give you D
- In what year was the Martyr Robert Cosin burned - the second and third digits will give you E and F

This will give you the Long in the form of: W FFF CB.EDA

Now you have your co-ordinates it's off to find the cache. Remember to take some time to admire the scenery - if it is a pleasant day the views from here are lovely.

Once you get to GZ the cache should be easy to find - as this is my first puzzle cache and because it is quite challenging I have put some goodies for the first 5 finders in the cache as follows:
- USB WiFi Finder/Dongle
- 256MB USB Memory Stick
- 128MB MicroSD Card + Adapter
- 2 pairs of headphones

Enjoy the cache and if you get stuck on any of the clues please don't hesitate to ask for a little hint :)
