The Little School on the Praire Cache is located in the tidy little town of Ellsworth, Nebraska. Ellsworth was named after one of the officials of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad in 1888. Cattle baron Bartlett Richards began assembling the Spade Ranch that same year, making Ellsworth a company town for the ranch. He soon built a general store that sold groceries and supplied the freight wagons that hauled north to the Spade Ranch Headquarters. The Spade, once Nebraska's largest ranch covering a half million acres, streched almost 30 miles to the north and included the area surrounding Ellsworth. A hotel was built across the street from the store and a windmill set in the middle of town. Richards built his stately summer home complete with courtyard north of the store which also served as the home to Lawrence Bixby second owner of the Spade. The stockyards in Ellsworth shipped thousands of cattle a year to the Union Stock Yards in Chicago and Omaha, and the passenger trains with daily stops made traveling an ease. The Ellsworth School organized in 1896 served Ellsworth until 2007 and the school yard is now a park. The tiny school house on skids that sits in the school yard was once pulled to the area ranches when a school was needed. Today the old Spade Store is an important part of the community offering a place to pick up mail, purchase ranch supplies, visit over a cup of coffee and catch the local gossip. The historical marker in Ellsworth tells the history of the Spade Ranch and Bartlett Richards, “perhaps Nebraska’s most famous rancher ever.”
