Lake Wanaka
You will need a runabout/yacht/kayak/dinghy/windsurfer for this adventure. Remember to pack a picnic.
Parking and excellent launching facilities are available in Roys Bay. You can also park and launch off the beach at Waterfall Bay (very close to your destination)
A tiny, 3.16 hectare, slither of rock protrudes from the waters of Lake Wanaka. This glacial rock ridge, known as Ruby Island, has long been used for picnicing and shoreline fishing by boat owners and their families.
A cabaret was built on the island during the 1920's and it attracted parties from the "mainland" until it was burnt down.
Ruby Island was gazetted as a reserve in 1886. It's current status is a recreational reserve administered by the Queenstown and Lakes District Council.
The Island has a jetty, picnic tables, a gas BBQ, toilet and a network of walking trails.
The cache, a screw top container placed at 300m a.s.l. and not visible from any direction, contains tradeable objects, a log book, pencils and a sharpener.
