Geocache Description:

Another mining sculpture to remind folks who visit that this area of Fife was once a very productive coalmining area and that, sadly, some miners (and their families) paid the ultimate sacrifice to mine the 'black gold'.

This talking point sculpture was unveiled to the public on 25th July 2008. It depicts a miner supporting a number of pit props and is the work of Fife-based sculptor David Annand and is the focal point of the square in the centre of Lochgelly, currently undergoing substantial regeneration.

It acknowledges Lochgelly's coal mining past while emphasising the need to build for the future. A poem, 'God the Miner' by local poet and principal teacher of English at nearby Beath High School, William Hershaw, is inscribed on the sculpture in old Scots.

Stars are the aizles he caws i the work.

Whilst being eyecatching, the sculpture is certainly slightly mystical. The man is meant to look as though he is made of coal but he is in fact made of bronze. He was made such as to give to give the appearance of being cracked and fractured like a coal seam.
