Geocache Description:

Mid Hill

This is an RSPB and SNH nature reserve

PLEASE KEEP TO THE PEAT CUTTERS TRACKS TO AVOID DISTURBANCE TO THE BIRDS AND KEEP DOGS UNDER CONTROL AT ALL TIMES.

Many thanks to the RSPB for their permission to place this cache.

This cache is a 2 litre cliplock container with logbook and pen with room for swaps and trackables.

This cache is hidden near the Mid Hill Trig point on the Birsay Moors Nature Reserve. It is an enjoyable 2 mile round trip walk. The first part of the walk is from the Birsay Moor carpark cache along the tarmac road to the start of the Peat Cutters track. The second part follows the Peat Cutters track to the trig point which can be muddy and wet in places. The third part is a short distance to the cache over heather covered peat.

Waterproof footwear is highly recommended.

From the Trig point there are great views over Loch Stenness, Loch Harry, the hills of Hoy. On a Clear day it is possible to pick out some of Orkneys landmarks such as Kitcheners Memorial and the Noup Head Lighthouse on Westray. If you are not familiar with the Orkney landscape it would be worthwhile to take a map and binoculars.

Direct access from the Car Park is not recommended. Many have tried and failed! As the ground is rough and covered with thick heather which is difficult to walk through and hides many potholes. There are also many old peat banks with vertical faces of up the eight feet. The following Waypoints are to help make your caching experience a pleasant one.

Starting Waypoint Birsay Moor Car Park N 59° 06.137 W 003° 08.281

Second Waypoint Start of Peat Cutters Track N 59° 06.032 W 003° 08.893
