Kahvankari on suojeltu monien muiden Oulun edustan saarien mukana vuonna 2010. Lisätietoja suojelusta Oulun kaupungin sivuilla. Vuoden 1997-1999 lintuatlas-tutkimuksen mukaan saaressa pesi mm. karikukko, joka on kahlaajiin kuuluva n. 22-24 cm pitkä musta-valko-ruskea lintu. Laji viihtyy yleensä ulkosaaristossa, mutta Oulun edustalla myös rannempana.
Saaressa on nuotiopaikka, joka on varsinkin kevättalvella jäällä liikkujien suosiossa. Puuladossa ei yleensä ole puita.

[EN] Kahvankari is a small island on the coast of Oulu. In the winter time, when the sea is frozen, it can be reached from Toppila-Pateniemi direction, e.g. from Rajahauta (roughly 6 km back and forth). Note that although the waterway to Toppila harbour is no longer used during the winter, the ice is much thinner between Toppilansalmi and Hermanni islands due to the river current, so arriving from Nallikari or Toppilansaari directions is a less safe option. Note also that the sea freezes and melts differently each year depending on temperature, sea level variations, local currents and wind direction and speed, so beware for thin ice and unfrozen spots. Weather and icewise March is typically the safest and the best month. Summertime you need a boat. Kahvankari has a place for camp fire but usually you need to have your own wood with you.
