Situata nella parte orientale delle mura, costituiva l'accesso principale alla città di Augusta Praetoria . Era dotata di tre aperture, ancor oggi visibili: quella centrale per i carri e quelle laterali per i pedoni. L'area all'interno delle aperture era utilizzata come cortile d'armi; nella sua parte meridionale, il terreno è stato scavato fino a raggiungere il livello del suolo in epoca
romana (circa due metri sotto il livello attuale – la differenza è dovuta ai materiali trasportati dalle piene fluviali). Nelle aperture rivolte all'esterno sono ancora visibili le scanalature entro cui correvano le cancellate che di notte venivano calate. Nella facciata esterna sono ancora visibili alcune delle lastre di marmo che rivestivano l'intero monumento, che all'interno
è costituito di blocchi di puddinga. Nel Medioevo fu addossata alla Porta Praetoria una cappella dedicata alla Santissima Trinità (ora non ne resta che una nicchia), da cui prese nome, per diversi secoli, anche la stessa Porta Praetoria.
Située dans la partie orientale des remparts, elle servait d'accès principal à la ville d'Augusta Praetoria . Elle possédait trois ouvertures que l'on peut encore voir aujourd'hui : l'ouverture centrale était réservée aux chars et les ouvertures latérales aux piétons. L'espace situé entre les ouvertures était utilisé comme place d'armes ; dans sa partie méridionale, le terrain a été creusé pour atteindre le niveau du sol à l'époque
romaine (environ deux mètres sous le niveau actuel - la différence est due aux matériaux chariés par les crues fluviales). Dans les ouvertures orientées vers l'extérieur, on peut encore voir les cordages qui tenaient les grilles que l'on baissait la nuit. Sur la façade extérieure, on peut encore voir des pavés de marbre qui recouvraient la totalité du monument dont l'intérieur
se compose de blocs de poudingue. Au Moyen Age, on adossa à la Porta Praetoria une chapelle dédiée à la Sainte Trinité (dont il ne reste qu'une niche) dont elle prit le nom, pendant plusieurs siècles ; ce fut aussi le cas de la Porta Praetoria.
Situated on the eastern part of the walls, it was the main point of access to the city of Augusta Praetoria . It had three openings which are still visible today: the central one for carriages and two side openings for pedestrians. The area inside the openings were used as a troupe parade court; in the southern part the land was dug until it reached the level of the ground during the Roman
era (around two metres under the current level – the difference is due to the material transported by the flooding rivers). On the openings facing outwards you can still see the grooves from where the gates were lowered at night. The external facade still has some marble slabs that covered the entire monument, which is internally
composed of clastic rock blocks. In medieval times Porta Praetoria had a nearby church dedicated to the Santissima Trinità (just an alcove remains today), with people calling Porta Praetoria by the name of the church for centuries.
