Geocache Description:

An E.G.G. in Elkins near the heart of West Virginia's trout fishing world.

The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources Coldwater Fisheries Section operates out of this nearby building. The scope of managing trout fisheries in West Virginia has changed a lot in recent years. A shift of focus has occurred from put and take fisheries to more emphasis on habitat management for wild and native trout fisheries. West Virginia is blessed to have nearly a thousand or more wild and native trout streams. The few men whose job it is to manage all this water have a tough and thankless task. Examples of some of their work include literally dozens and dozens of headwater native brook trout (our state fish) tributaries that once rendered lifeless from acid rain and acid mine drainage now restored through limestone sand treatment. The technology of limestone sand treatment to mitigate acidified runoff and acidified streambeds was invented and refined right here in West Virginia by the folks who work in this nearby building. West Virginia is blessed to have some of the best wild and native trout fishing in the eastern United States, hopefully these public servants will be able to keep it that way in the face of numerous threats.
