I’ve often driven down Lever Causeway and wondered about its
history. Surely a mile long, dead-straight, tree lined avenue, with
a name including “Lever” would have some fascinating history. We
have therefore placed a cache roughly in the middle of this
causeway. There is a convenient lay by on the right if you turn up
the side road by the cache – please use it.
So what history have I uncovered? The answer is relatively little!
Lever Causeway built 1912-1914 and is one of several planned
avenues designed by Viscount Leverhulme. It links Storeton with
Little Storeton. There were plans to build large areas of housing
near here, and Lever Causeway would have been a main access road,
but those plans never came to fruition.
One of the down sides of a long flat straight road like this is
that it encourages those who like to go fast. It has seen several
serious accidents over the years, and is therefore a favourite spot
for the police to set up their speed cameras! If you park as
suggested, there is no need to cross either the side road or the
main Lever Causeway, but still take care with any both children and
pets.
