High & Low Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

MainePublisher: All geocache placements must have a responsive owner. The cache owner must be able to respond to issues that come up and to submit an "owner maintenance" log to remove the "needs maintenance" icon.

In addition to the "needs maintenance" logs and DNF logs, Goundspeak also uses a Health Score algorithm. https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=38&pgid=713

In this case, Groundspeak has sent an email to the cache owner with no response. The cache owner did not respond to any of the cachers hoping to find the cache and did not respond to the reviewer note so the cache is now archived.

The cache location is now open for any Geocacher to place a new cache, including the original cache owner.

Geocache Description:

A traditional cache on an undeveloped island located .5 miles from the parking area.

This cache is located on Sears Island, in Searsport, and is part of a series of caches intended to show off this beautiful spot. The 900+ acre Island lies in Penobscot Bay, and is attached to the mainland by a man made causeway. The hike around on the beach is about 5 miles (best done between high tides). A dirt road runs the 2 mile length of the island in a north-south direction (turn left halfway up the hill on the paved road). Motorized vehicles are not allowed except for utility workers. Park on the causeway, but don't block the gate. Wear blaze orange during hunting season in the fall. Conditions vary widely – plan carefully and use common sense.

This cache overlooks the beach on the northeast corner of Sears Island. The title refers to the tides, the temperatures, the wind, the visibility due to fog, and the way the tides rearrange the gravelly sand after storms try to take it away. This coarse sand is as good as sand gets around here – it's coarser than the clam flats you cross to get to this beach, but finer than the rocks and cobblestones you'll encounter if you continue around the island. The structure nearby in the water is a practice dock used by Maine Maritime Academy for Tugboat “driver training”. It's fun to watch if you happen to be here at the right time.

The cache title also refers to your search for the cache, but it really isn't very difficult. The cache is a large plastic container with a screw top. Inside is a large zip lock containing log and pencils, with plenty of room for a variety of trade items. Please hide it as you found it to prevent passers by from finding it accidentally. This cache has been muggled, and replaced twice.

Although several finders have encountered tough terrain on their way to this cache, there are at least 3 easier routes to take, therefore the terrain rating of 2.

We hope you enjoy Sears Island as much as we do, and please tell us about your adventure in your log.

Congratulations parmachenee for another FTF - 4 for 4 from 4ccnhikers!!
