Geocache Description:

A small traditional cache, hidden somewhat on the conjecture of it’s appearance at this time

From a vantage spot nearby you can look across the paddock and see some remains of what was once a significant local industry. The original owner was a Mr Schillerio who established a slaughtering business supplying meat to the inhabitants of the district.
In it’s heydey the Edinburgh Tannery employed 30 people and processed 5000 hides per year. The Abbott family purchased the tannery in the late 1800’s to complement their Bendigo operations. The focus of production here was actually on exporting leather goods to London. A number of the tannery workers lived in cottages surrounding the tannery. R. H. S. Abbott successfully operated an extensive business until 1904.

The Abbott Suppply Company, dealing in general hardware, steel and agricultural requirements, still operates in Golden Square.
