Välkommen till Alingsås Welcome to Alingsås
För många är någon av genomfartslederna det enda man ser av Alingsås. Till Alingsås kan man med bil komma från fem håll – E20 SW och NE, Rv180 SW och NE och 1890 N. Man kan också ta sig till Alingsås med tåg, antingen med pendeltåg från Göteborg eller med regiontåg.
Vi har lagt ut cacher i anslutning till infarterna så att man får en anledning att stanna till. Kanske någon till och med blir intresserad av att besöka själva staden också.		 Many people just drive through Alingsås on one of the routes passing through Alingsås. By car you can arrive in Alingsås from five directions - E20 SW and NE, Rv180 SW and NE and 1890 N. You can also take the train, the western main line railroad passes through on its way from Gothenburg to Stockholm
To give you a reason to stop for a while, we have placed caches close to the roads where you enter Alingsås. Maybe someone will become interested and visit the town as well.
Alingsås är en gammal stad. Namnet Alingsås (Alinxaas) är känt sedan 1300-talet. Det anses vara en sammansättning av aling = "person från Ale härad" och höjdbeteckningen ås. Redan under medeltiden växte Alingsås kyrkby upp vid Nolbyåsen (Alingx-åsen). Allfarleden från Skara till handelsplatsen Älvsborg vid Göta Älvs mynning, gick genom byn vilket tidigt gjorde den till en betydande handelsplats. 1619 fick Alingsås stadsrättigheter.

Under 1720-talet inleddes Alingsås storhetstid. Då grundade Jonas Alströmer manufakturverket. I övriga landet är han nog mest känd för att införa potatisen i Sverige men i och med manufakturerna blev Alingsås en av de främsta städerna inom textilindustrin.

1861 grundade engelsmannen Charles Hill Alingsås bomullsväveri vilket efterhand blev en dominerande industri i staden. Hill såg också till att gasljuset infördes, både i fabrikerna och som gatubelysning. Textilindustrin fick Alingsås att växa och från sekelskiftet 1800-1900 till mitten av 1900-talet ökade antalet invånare från ca 3000 till dryga 12000.

Samma år som bomullsväveriet grundades, invigdes västra stambanan (järnvägen mellan Göteborg och Stockholm) vilket också hade en stor betydelse för Alingsås utveckling.

Textilindustrin var som störst runt 1950. I mitten på 60-talet avvecklades den till följd av en allmän textilkris i Sverige. Verkstadsindustrin tog över som stadens viktigaste verksamhet.

Alingsås fortsatte att växa och några kringliggande församlingar och kommuner införlivades i Alingsås kommun. Idag har Alingsås ca 36000 invånare.

Alingsås kallas ibland för den trivsamma trästaden. Den har genom åren behållit sin karaktär av småstadsidyll med gamla byggnader från 1700- och 1800-talet. De äldsta bevarade byggnaderna är museet, ett stenhus, från 1730-talet som ursprungligen var Jonas Alströmers magasin, det rosa rådhuset vid Stora torget från 1769 och den vackra stadskyrkan från 1652. Dessutom är flera av de gamla hantverksgårdarna från 1800-talet välbevarade.

Alingsås är också känd som caféstaden. En förklaring till att Alingsås har byggt upp en café- och bageristad sägs vara att många kvinnor under 1900-talets första hälft arbetade i industrier och därför inte hann baka sitt eget bröd utan fick köpa färskt bröd. Flertalet av cafeérna var under många år utpräglade arbetarfik. Att "handla och fika" i Alingsås är ett begrepp som står sig än idag; cafékulturen lever i allra högsta grad.

Runt om Alingsås finns vacker natur och många sjöar. Nära centrum finns Nolhaga där det finns promenadstigar, ett litet minizoo och en lekplats.

Kommer du till Alingsås i oktober kan man passa på att besöka ljusfestivalen Ljus i Alingsås, där ljusdesigners från hela världen ljussätter olika platser runt om i staden.
 Alingsås is an old town. The name Alingsås (Alinxaas) is known since the 14th century. Most likely it’s a compound made from aling (a person from Ale) and ås (a word for a small ridge). During the Middle Ages Alingsås Church Village originated at Nolbyåsen (Alingx-åsen) when inhabitants from the city Nya Lödöse were made homeless as Danish troops burnt it down.
The main road from Skara to the marketplace in Älvsborg at the mouth of the Göta River, went through the village which early on made it an important marketplace. In 1619 Alingsås got its town privileges.

Around 1720 Alingsås had its days of glory. Jonas Alströmer established a large scale draper's industry which before soon became Sweden’s largest. In the rest of the country Alströmer probably mostly is well known for introducing the potato plant to Sweden.

In 1861 the Englishman Charles Hill founded Alingsås Cotton Weaving Mill which soon grew to a large industry. Hill also introduced the gas light, both in the factories and as street lighting. The textile industry grew and so did Alingsås. A lot of people moved here, from 1900 to 1950 the number of inhabitants increased from 3000 to more than 12000.

The same year as the weaving mill was founded, the western main line railroad was inaugurated and that also played an important role in Alingsås development. The textile industry had its peak around 1950. Only about 15 years later it was terminated due to a general textile crisis in Sweden. Mechanical industry took over as the town’s most important industry.

Alingsås continued to grow and some close parishes and municipalities were incorporated into Alingsås municipality. Today Alingsås has around 36000 inhabitants.

Alingsås is sometimes called the pleasant Wooden Town. It has during the years kept its character as a small town with old buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The oldest preserved buildings are the museum, a stone house built around 1730 by Jonas Alströmer, the pink wooden city hall from 1769 at the Town Square and the church from 1652. Several of the old artisan’s buildings from the 19th century are also well preserved.

Alingsås is also known for its cafes. An explanation to why there are so many of them is that a lot of women during the first half of the 20th century worked in factories and didn’t have time to bake their own bread. In stead they had to buy fresh bread. Still a lot of people take a “fika” (to sit down and eat and drink something in a cafe) when they are in town shopping.

Alingsås is surrounded by beautiful countryside and a lot of lakes. Close to the city centre you find Nolhaga where you can take a walk, visit the small zoo or the large playground.

If you come to Alingsås in October you can visit the annual lighting festival Lights in Alingsås where lighting designers from all over the world create exciting lighting of buildings and parks in and around the central parts of the town.
