The cache is not in Hockley Woods but the recommended parking
is. From there to the cache and return is less than one and a half
miles; but maybe better to linger on the woodland paths enjoying
the walking.
Hockley Woods is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. A site
of national importance as an ancient woodland. Please treat with
respect and "Cache in Trash out" please
Over 130 hectares, it is the largest remaining area of woodland
that grew in Essex after the ice age. There are many plant species,
each growing where the conditions best suit them -- there are oak
and sweet chestnut on higher ground: birch on the most acidic
soils; hornbeam on the wet clays; willow, hazel and ash along the
streams; and many other plants such as the wild service tree and of
course the delightful wood anenomes. Please add to the photo
gallery through the different seasons.
The original ammo case has gone. I hunted around the woods &
found another of the original Hockley caches & have used this
camo bag covered screw tube to replaced it. It has:--
A bag of goodies .
A log book and pencils.
The footpath map board (as shown above) is at the east end of
the car park. Will be muddy in winter.
Access gates to parking close at dusk.
