The Tin Tabernacle - Walsall Church Gems

This cache is one of a series set at or near churches in Walsall. Thanks to The Washers and Izzy and the Lizard King for their Shropshire Church Gems which have inspired us.
The Mission Church of Christ the King was built in 1887as a temporary building for the people of the mining community of Rushall. It is a small chapel in Rushall square, with traditional arched windows and an apex roof. On 11th March 2008 the church celebrated 120 years.
During the period from 1870's to WWI corrugated iron and galvanised sheets were used as building materials. The population was growing rapidly, and moving from rural areas to industrial towns. Demand was great for churches, schools and dwellings, but traditional materials were scarce.
Tin Tabernacles as they are known, were often produced as pre-fabricated kits from builders merchants. They were considered to be temperary structures, and could be moved to a new site if the need arose.
Today few survive, although some have been moved to museums where they can be preserved. There is another locally, on the Aldridge Road Streetly, it is used asa commercial premises, and looks sadly rather neglected.
NOTE: THE CACHE IS LOCATED NEAR TO THE CHURCH
THE JUNCTION IS VERY BUSY SO GEOKIDS AND ADULTS NEED TO TAKE GREAT CARE.
The cache is a small flat rectangular anglers tackle box, containing log book, pencil & pencil sharpener, FTF badge and space for a couple of other little goodies. There may be space for small TB's or geocoins.
