Geocache Description:

Near the center of Jerusalem lies a small patch of wild nature. Just south of the city's central park, Gan Saker, the Valley of the Cross is a place of gnarled olive trees and wildflowers in season.

By Christian tradition, the valley is the location from which the wood for the cross of Jesus was harvested. It is dominated by the ancient, citadel-like, Monastery of the Cross, and offers a great place for quiet walks and peaceful picnics.
The valley position in the heart of the city has inspired for quite a few of Jerusalem's poets. Yehuda Amichai, perhaps its greatest poet, brings up his youth spent in the vicinity of the Valley:

This might have been a poem praising
my sweet imagined childhood God.
It was Friday, black angels filled
the Valley of the Cross, their wings
black houses, deserted quarries.
Sabbath candles danced like ships
at the harbor entrance. "Come, bride,"
wear the clothes of your tears and glory
from the night you thought I wouldn't come
and I came.

(thanks for Michael for introducing me to the poem).

NOTE TO SOLO TRAVELERS: Like any unlit place, the Valley of the Cross is best avoided at night.
