Geocache Description:

Lake Onslow Series #1 (of 6).

An easy multi based around Lake Onslow. Available over the Summer months only. The choice of name will become obvious at WP#1

The easiest, and most scenic, access is from the Millers Flat/Paerau Rd at S45 45 30.706 E169 37.528
Go through gate #15 then another gate and you are there.
The area is privately owned but the owner is very generous in granting full public access.
PLEASE remember the rules:

If a gate is open - leave it open,
If it is closed - close it behind you.

Lake Onslow is a multi purpose reservoir, the water being used for irrigation and for power generation. There is another dam, down steam, at Horseshoe Bend and there are four sites where power is generated. The water is piped and open raced to the various generation sites and also to the water races and holding dams on the orchards. Water is also taken for farm pasture/crop irrigation.

The lake can, at times, be a very fun place to fish for brown trout.These are pink fleshed and very tasty either pan fried or smoked.

A lot of fun can be had dry-fly fishing but worming, threadlineing and trolling can also yield good catches.

The cache owner by far prefers to dry-fly fish or to use lures such as a "Mrs Simpson", but each to his own as long as you have a licence and are having fun.

The container at WP#1 is black and small (but not nano).
The cache container is a clear 200ml Sistema Klip It and when placed contained:

  • A stash note.
  • A small log book.
  • Pencil and sharpener.
  • Aussie penny, 1951.
