Hearing about Lance Armstrong’s intention to return to competitive cycling inspired me to dust off my old, beat up mountain bike. It was broken down and needed some maintenance. I had also been toying with the idea of experimenting with some custom made gears. What better time than now to give it a try. I modified some sprockets I had laying around from another project and decided to take it out for a spin. I was a little nervous that reliability might be an issue, but off I went anyway.
The path I had in mind was mostly uphill. Even so, with a 33 tooth sprocket in front and a 25 tooth sprocket in the rear I was able to maintain a leisurely 65 stroke per minute cadence for an hour and 43 minutes before I arrived at my favorite resting spot. As I sat in the shade, for some reason I thought about Lance Armstrong and his accomplishments and was determined to pick up the pace for the ride home.
Knowing that my rear tire is 80 inches in circumference I did the math and determined that if I switched to my more radical gears I could cover over twice the distance in less time and take the more scenic route home. Putting the chain on the 49 tooth front sprocket and the 20 tooth rear sprocket, I set out on the much longer, but downhill, route home to the west. Even with the faster gearing I knew I would have to pick up the pace considerably to get home before dark. Averaging a brisk 95 stroke per minute cadence I knew I would make it. One hour and 29 minutes later, just as I was about to reach my goal, bad luck stopped me cold. Hitting a pothole, I was thrown over the handlebars 8' 8" through the air to the exact spot I had started from earlier in the day. Fortunately I was wearing a helmet and, more importantly, no one witnessed my embarrassing finish.
As I was recovering from my workout I realized that I must have dropped my small magnetic container where I had rested. The first person to find it can keep the unactivated FTF Geocoin but don’t forget to sign the log. The sign says you should look for the cache before 10:30 PM.
Congratulations to Marble Guy and Thunderslide on the FTF
