Geocache Description:

Off of Hwy 169/40 Valley of Fire Highway. Short walk right off
the highway. Find a good spot for your vehicle to pull well off the
pavement.

This cache is placed at the location that the
California Wash Fault Line runs under the Valley of Fire Highway.
This active fault line runs from north of Nellis Dunes at the
Southern part of the muddy Mountains. Running up the west side of
the mountain across this area and curving under I-15 at Byron exit.
This fault has been the topic of many studies and projects. When
the Hoover dam was built it was built to withstand a quake from the areas 11 active faults systems.
This being one of them, as it is capable of a 7.0 jolt. This fault and magnitude was also concidered on building of the
Hoover Dam by-pass bridge. Along with a possible 6.2 near Lake Mead on the Mead Slope Faults.

Scarp profiles indicate a range in scarp height from 2.1 to 9.8 m, which suggests recurrent Quaternary displacement. The most recent displacement event may be 10,000 years ago. Faults Slip rate is reported to be between 0.2 and 1.0 mm/yr. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FAULT INFO
