Birthday Hunt Club Letterbox Hybrid
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is a geocache/letterbox to say Happy Birthday to my wife who
got our family into geocaching and letterboxing. My wife’s last
name just happens to be “Hunt” so the location just makes it that
much better.
The site of this cache and letterbox is an old hunting camp that
the locals would use as a staging area where they would head out
from and come back to after hunting in the hills around
here.
This is a letterbox hybrid cache. You may trade items and
tractables, but the letterboxing items enclosed in the specifically
marked Ziploc must remain there. If you have a personal letterbox
stamp, please stamp the appropriate visitor book. If you do not
have a personal stamp, just sign the geocache log.
For those who love hiking on Tam but experience seasonal weariness
due to fair weather crowds and that "been there, done that,"
feeling, have I got a preserve for you. Gary Giacomini Open Space
Preserve, which runs along the north side of the San Geronimo Ridge
between Sir Francis Drake and Fairfax-Bolinas Road, will have you
looking at northern Marin County in a whole new way, literally.
There's excitement and drama (driving on tiny winding roads,
searching for the trailheads, gambling on the availability of
parking), and a rugged, unsigned trail system is not for
sissies.
In the true sense of a letterbox hybrid, I will tell you exactly
how to get to this cache! First, here is a link to the Gary
Giacomini Open Space Map --->

The best way to start your trek is to park (if there is parking)
near the gate at the beginning of the Sylvestris Fire Road on East
Sylvestris Drive which can be accessed from San Geronimo Valley
Drive. Hike 8/10ths of a mile up from the gate until you come to
the junction of Sylvestris and Hunt Camp Fire Roads. At the
junction take a right and head northwest for 1/5th of a mile
staying on the Hunt Camp F.R. until you come to a water trough. You
have now reached Hunt Camp! Now stand in front of the trough and
step off 13 paces to the south, which should take you to the middle
of the tables and benches. Look up a slight hill to your right and
walk 40 paces west until you come to the green colored locked top
of a well. Look straight ahead and take an additional 14 paces to
your west until you reach the largest fir tree in the immediate
area. You will find the cache on the backside of the tree at the
base.
Congratulations! You have just found one of the very few
Geocache/Letterbox hybrids in Marin County!!!
