Geocache Description:

Cache and Dash. Parking across the road from the cache at the old school.

Cullicudden situated on the north side of the Black Isle is predominately a farming area with conifer plantations higher up. First acknowledge as such is in a deed signed by the Parson of Cullicudden and other clergy in 1226 and also shown on a map dated 1227 as Culicuden.

It is likely that Cullicudden is based on the gaelic "Cuil" meaning nook or niche and probably "a'chudainn" of the cuddies' (small fish). Looking at modern maps it is hard to identify anything that relates to this except the small cove due north of Wester Cullicudden with a small fresh water pool which might have harboured minnows or stickleback. So if any of you have a better ideas please get in touch.

So finally to get to the main point of the exercise is once you reach the cache site you will encounter the Cuddie definately out of its depth. This came about a few years ago as a project by the Cullicudden Primary School which was due to close as a memory of its former existance. The local blacksmith/artist created the Cuddie along with the help of the children at the school.

I hope you enjoy the visit and enjoy the views over the Cromarty Firth to Ben Wyvis and other hills above villages on the north side of the firth.
