This cache has been archived.

Odie442: This one had a good run so I will retire and look at something a little different later down the road. Thanks to all who found the Jason Hockey Mask hidden in the mini forest.

Geocache Description:

In 1975 everyone was asked “Is it safe to go back in the water?” with the release of Jaws in the theaters. Then in 1980 the public was asked “Is it safe to go into the woods?” when the first of what has become an American staple of Horror films was released titled “Friday the 13th”. With the remake (reboot) of “Friday the 13th” being released to theaters today (Friday February 13th, 2009) , I felt it fitting to place this cache and ask “Is it safe to go back in the woods.” It also helps that my name is Jason. And yes, you can do this one at night for even more of an heart pumping rush.

A little history into what we know as “Friday the 13th.”

The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia, and according to folklorists, there is no written evidence for a "Friday the 13th" superstition before the 19th century. The earliest known documented reference in English occurs in an 1869 biography of Gioachino Rossini:

Rossini was surrounded to the last by admiring and affectionate friends; and if it be true that, like so many others, he regarded Friday as an unlucky day, and thirteen as an unlucky number. It is also remarkable that he died on Friday, the 13th of November in 1868.

In numerology, the number twelve is considered the number of completeness, as reflected in the twelve months of the year, twelve signs of the zodiac, twelve hours of the clock, twelve tribes of Israel, twelve Apostles of Jesus, twelve gods of Olympus, etc., whereas the number thirteen was considered irregular, transgressing this completeness. There is also a superstition, thought by some to derive from the Last Supper or a Norse myth, that having thirteen people seated at a table will result in the death of one of the diners.

Friday has been considered an unlucky day at least since the 14th century's The Canterbury Tales, and many other professions have regarded Friday as an unlucky day to undertake journeys or begin new projects.

Please do not try and remove the container from prop, just unscrew the lid on bottom to get to the log, and please put it back exactly how you found it.

And fitting, this is also my 13th traditional cache to be hidden. And another fun bit, if you add up the numbers in the release date (not counting the 13) you will get yet another 13 (2+2+9).

Additional - For the true Fright factor, try this one at night, flashlight is optional. I actually placed this cache at 12:30am with a full moon (see picture) and a little bit of fog when I finished work.
