Hidden in one of the south side's smaller parks, this is none the less appealing for all. Easily accessible by public transport (Mawell park train station) as well as being wheelchair accessible, unless very wet.
Please be aware that the park is open during daylight hours only.
Maxwell Park was opened in 1890, its 21 acres having been gifted by Sir John Maxwell of Pollock Estate. Due to its damp ground, an extensive draining system was installed, draining the water to the pond on the west of the park. This is now a wildlife habitat, with a variety of birds nesting on the reedy island.
In 1908 the Hamilton Fountain was opened, having been built by the Misses Hamilton in honor of their father and brothers who had previously enjoyed wild fowling on the land. Over the years the fountain fell into disrepair, and now all that remains is the edging of the original fountain, being used as a flower bed.
On the edge of the park stands the former Pollokshields Burgh Hall, built in dark red sandstone and in 17th century Scottish domestic style. It was also opened in 1890, and contained various council offices and a courtroom. There was also a Masonic meeting place, which explains the various masonic carvings and stained glass windows. Above the main door is the Maxwell coat of arms, and the entrance is guarded by two lions holding a shield with the initials PBH, and the burgh's motto "Aye ready". The 60ft Baronial tower standing behind the entrance has a number of interesting details including virgil windows and a little stone balcony. To the left of the hall is the former park keeper`s lodge. There are a number of other sayings dotted about the building also.
Following funding from many sources the building was renovated and reopened to the public in 1997, and now holds various functions in its magnificent rooms.
The cache is hidden inside the grounds of Maxwell Park, and should be wheelchair accessible unless the ground is very wet and boggy. Thanks to Maxwell Park train station, access from the city centre is very easy and fast on the Cathcart line. There is also ample parking all around the park. Very family friendly, there is a small playground and many ducks, swans and other birdlife on the pond.
Cache has been loaded with small toys and a travel bug and geocoin, and hopes to be a firm favorite with adventurous trackable items! Please be stealth, as many muggles and their dogs here.
