26th Infantry Division: Schankegriecht
Hugh M. Cole writes in The Ardennes: Battle of the Bulge:
“While the 26th Reconnaissance Troop rolled out as a screen several thousand yards to the fore, the 104th Infantry on the right marched through dense woods and over slushy, muddy trails, finally coming out onto open, rolling fields near the village of Pratz, about three miles by road from the Attert.”
On the morning of December 22, 1944, attacking through a snowstorm, the 26th Infantry Division moved out against unknown enemy strength in unknown positions from their assembly area around Eischen. They made contact with the 352. Volks-Grenadier-Division north of Bettborn in a place known as Schankegriecht. In the ensuing skirmishes and artillery barrages, the German advance was stopped and the 26th Infantry Division commenced the liberation of the occupied villages to the north.
For further information, I recommend the advanced infantry officers course by Major John J. Beeson III: "Operations of Company D, 104th Infantry, 26th Infantry Division, in the attack from Bettborn to Buschrodt, Luxembourg, 22-24 December 1944" which you can find on the site of Fort Benning's Maneuver Center of Excellence Libraries.
Lest we forget: a memorial is situated on the road just outside Pratz.
A hike of approximately 3 miles. For the locals the Schankegriecht is also the home of the “Schankemännchen”. Nobody has ever seen it...
