The Lade Braes walk begins in the town itself but this series of caches are set along the open area following the Kinnes Burn
In 1856 Baillie John McIntosh planted the first trees along the streets of St Andrews and also began planting trees along the North side of the Lade Braes, at that time an unkempt ravine.
McIntosh’s work was taken up by John Milne in 1887 and by 1891 the walk was laid out as we know it today. When the Town Council’s funds ran out Milne planted trees along the south side of the water at his own expense.
The walk can be accessed from many places along the main road but we have set a series of 5 which, when combined, make a pleasant walk along the (approx) mile of the Lade Braes.
Cockshaugh Park was developed into a public park in 1895 by Baillie John Milne.
“Haugh” denotes a low lying area of ground by a river and “cock” is thought to refer to the fact that this field was used to rear domestic fowl but it equally may refer to the old sport of cock fighting This field is still used today for sports matches, fairs and derby days.
