Geocache Description:

Quick cache and dash near railway bridge close to St Mary's Church.

Cache is a 35mm pot containing the log only together with £1 for FTF.

Cache is a couple of feet off of road.

Please bring your own pen or pencil to log.

The road is fairly quiet but please be careful with children.

The first chapel is believed to have been built around 1100. A chaplain is mentioned around 1250 and as one of the two bells is thought to be 13th century it is possible that the chapel was rebuilt at this time. The older bell was moved to Westbury parish church after closure in 1973.
In 1362 there is mention of a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas with its own graveyard, and this was the early chapel. After 1380 a new church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, was built opposite the old chapel and its graveyard and the old chapel became redundant. The present church dates from the 15th century but incorporates part of the earlier building, including the south porch, which was built about a hundred years before. The church included a nave, north aisle and a chancel with the 14th century south porch. The construction is rubble with plaster rendering and a vestry was added in the early 18th century. Until 1631 burials took place at Westbury but in that year the ground around the church was cleared and consecrated as a burial ground. The long communion table also dates from the 17th century.
Inside there are galleries, a three decker pulpit and box pews and
an octagonal font that is a 19th century copy of a 15th century font.

The church opened and closed several times during the 20th century until finally closing in 1973. In 1974 the church was put into the care of the Redundant churches Fund.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
