Ranger Challenge #26 LBC Traditional Cache

The first 250 participants to locate all 30 Ranger Geo-Challenge caches will be awarded with a trackable Ranger Geo-Challenge coin. The Park Ranger Geo-Challenge will work off of a passport system. To be eligible for the coin, geocachers must download a printable passport from the PGParks.com or Maryland Geocaching Society www.mdgps.org web site. You must locate all 30 "Ranger Challenge" geocaches and stamp your passport using the stamp found in the cache container on the corresponding square on your passport. To get credit for the find, participants must log the find and post a picture of them self with the cache container at each cache location on the individual Geocaching.com cache page. You may cache in groups, however, your log must include the picture of you and the cache box. Group pictures are acceptable.

This ranger cache is located at the Little Bennett Campground which is part of Little Bennett Regional Park. The campground offers visitors quality wooded campsites and miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails throughout 3,700 acres of forests and meadows. Little Bennett Regional Park is the largest park in Montgomery county! With more than 20 miles of trails to explore, 91 wooded campsites from which to choose, and a variety of weekend activities available for all age groups and interests, Little Bennett Regional Park is a perfect weekend get-away or vacation spot. Little Bennett Campground and Little Bennett Regional Park are located in northern Montgomery County, 30 miles north of Washington, D.C., 50 miles west of Baltimore, Maryland, and 15 miles south of historic Frederick, Maryland.

This park is filled with rich history. As early as the 18th century, the Little Bennett Valley was the scene of farms and small scale industries capitalizing on the region's abundant resources of timber, water, vegetation and vast acreage for farming. Several grist mills, a sumac mill, a saw mill, a saw and bone mill and a whisky manufactory were established at various timess along the Little Bennett Creek. Only the Hyattstown Mill remains as testimony to those early enterprises. The steep and rocky slopes did not encourage farming; but the farmers persevered nonetheless. They raised tobacco, for example, into the 20th century, even though the emphasis had long before shifted to grains. Around the close of the 19th century, a small rural community was established in the valley. It was named Kingsley after the King Family, who were prominent in the area. The last remaining vestige of that settlement is a one-room schoolhouse.
