JERSEY AIRPORT

The airport was opened at St Peter on 10th March 1937, with four grass runways. The airport complex included a central tower and two side buildings for departures and arrivals, designed with future expansion in mind.

A 4,200ft tarmac runway was built in 1952 to replace the grass strips and in 1976 an extension to the airfield area took place and a 6,000ft concrete runway was built. The airport building was added to, doubling its size.

In 1997 the biggest extension of the airport building was opened. The new John le Fondré hall provided more space and better facilities for departing passengers and the rest of the building was also greatly improved.

Work on re tarmacing the runway started in 2008 and is due to finish in the spring of 2009.The work for this has been carried out at night.

In 2008 construction of the new Air Traffic Control building, which has a budget of £6m, started and will take 53 weeks to build. This will be followed by a further six months for the equipment fit out and staff training before the facility becomes fully operational in the second quarter of 2010. The current air traffic facilities will subsequently be demolished during the second half of 2010, forming part of the longer term redevelopment of the arrivals facilities.

This cache is placed alongside the runway of Jersey airport, on a pathway open to the public leading down to St Ouens with some fantastic panoramic views over St Ouens Bay. Parking is available at the St Peters end of the pathway.
