Masonic Treasure awaits
The Scottish Rite is not affiliated with Scottish culture, but is instead one of the appendant bodies available for Freemasons once they have become a Master Mason. Referred to as the “College of Freemasonry”, the Scottish Rite confers the 4th through 32nd degrees as well as the honorary 33rd degree. These lessons or “degrees” originated in France and were based on legends that came from Scotland – hence the name. The original Scottish Rite building in downtown Montgomery was dedicated in 1926, but was taken over by the state during the depression and became home to the Alabama Treasury Department until 1990. The current Scottish Rite Center was built in 1976. Besides being home to the Scottish Rite, it is also the meeting place of two Masonic lodges, and two Masonic youth groups –DeMolay International and Order of Rainbow for Girls.
