Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache easily accessible from a paved parking lot. Besides a log book and pencil, at startup it contains the Quiltilion TB, Deming memorabilia and brochures, 2008 Duck Races pin for the FTF, kid pony tail wraps, in loving memory medal, and a bracelet.

The State of New Mexico’s got rocks! Geology is one of the best things we’ve got going for us here. And Deming’s got rocks in spades! We’ve got so many good ones we invite you to carry some home with you when you visit Rockhound State Park southeast of Deming. New Mexicans love our rocks.

There are lots of caches out in Rockhound, but very few on your way out there, right in Deming. So I’ve established this easy cache to give you a quick find between the interstate and the wealth of sites in the park. I’ve got rocks here too, but they didn’t get here by natural means.

The story of this site is one of neighbors having good-natured fun with one another. When I wanted to put up a carport I checked to see exactly where my lot line was. Turns out each of us in this park owns our lot from the edge of our driveway to the edge of our neighbor’s driveway. For whatever reason, a previous owner of my lot decided to put up a chainlink fence nearly two feet inside his property line. Thus there is a two-foot wide strip of unclaimed land between my fence and my neighbors’ driveway. It seemed natural to me that since it was more accessible from their side of the fence they should be responsible for the upkeep of the strip. We discussed this when the leaves fell in the fall and the question of who was to rake them came up. I maintained they should rake because they had access, and they maintained that I should rake because the strip belonged to me. Ultimately the leaves blew away.

Knowing our mutual dislike of plastic yard ornaments I decided to take a different approach. In December I announced that I had decided to acquire a flock of life-sized flamingos to decorate “my” strip. I thought two dozen would make a good start. I could hear them gasp. I was heartened several days later when they returned from a trip in the truck with wonderful boulders to create a rock garden. Now we’ve agreed to share responsibility for the rocks and the plants we put there. Good neighbors are good to have.

Please do not remove any rocks from the rock garden. Donations of new interesting rocks would be welcomed. This cache is large enough for you to have room to deposit travelers and other items. It’s my first and only cacheand I'm hoping to host many travelers here.

You can ignore the "no trespassing" sign posted at the entrance to the park. You are not trespassers--you are my guests, even if we do not meet. Park management has agreed to host this cache. The park is dog friendly so long as your dog is well behaved, leashed and potty trained. Cats and birds have free access, so please do not harass them. Park in the big lot, away from the “street” so as not to upset the neighbors. Please do not go inside the fence unless I'm around--I'd love to meet you.
