Geocache Description:

Another Pawnee County Tour stop! This may be the most unusual of all. You may go through the gates, but be a good country neighbor and close them when you leave, although there are no animals around the mound.

There are two gates to this property, which is owned by The Pawnee County Historical Society and the cache placed with their permission. These are not city gates with hinges, but country gates of simple posts and barb wire. The easiest one to operate is on the east side but requires negotiating a cattle guard and bar gate before reaching the gate to the mound. The other gate is right on the road but is strung much tighter and is more difficult to open.

PLEASE DO NOT DIG ANYWHERE IN THE MOUND. IT IS STERILE FOR ARTIFACTS. We believe the severe erosion problem on the south side may be due to the activities of an OSU survey many years ago.

The "out of context" formation was built by primitive people, exact time frame unknown. We have been told an archeological group from OSU surveyed it in the 1920's but found no artifacts. It is believed to be 100% astrological in purpose, although sacrificial elements cannot be discounted, especially considering the large rock slab at the top. If you stand on this mound on the Spring or Fall Equinox, the sun rises through a notch in the horizon to the east.
