Sinking Spring Drive-In
My wife and I grew up in the Berks County and have very fond memories of extinct sites around the county. This is the first in a series of traditional caches that might bring back fond memories of long gone sites around our county. Many of us have passed these locations from the past with little regard to the lost local commercial history.
The Sinking Spring Drive-In was the first drive-in I attended with my parents. We went to see the “Return of the Pink Panther” in our VW bus. This was the era when you pulled up to a little squawk box that hooked onto your window so you could hear the movie. I also went to this drive-in with my fiancée (now my wife) before it closed down in 1996. In later years, the technology progressed to using your car radio tuned to a local transmitter within the projection booth. This was much nicer than relocating your car trying to find a working squawk box. Let’s not forget the parking humps used to raise the front end of the car so everyone could see. This was the stadium seating of drive-ins. On weekends the parking area was often used for tailgate yard sales.
Now the site is yet another shopping center with a grocery store, fast food and a bank. How many more of these do we need? So where do I take my kids to show them the pleasures of a drive-in theater? Maybe they will only know of such things from movies and the stories we tell them.
Just down the road is more of Berks’ past. There was Gooney Golf which also had go-cart racing. When one finished golfing, there was Miller’s Ice Cream right next door. These were too close to justify an additional cache at these past Berks’ haunts.
This is a quick cache and dash, but be aware of high muggle activity in the area.
