Geocache Description:

Cache is close to Rye House Gatehouse

The cache container is a small sandwich container. Contained several trinkets, and a log book (no pencil).

This is a continuation from the Fantastic Cat and Essex Kellys series between Fieldes Weir and Hertford. Further caches along the route to come.

This cache is in the ground of Rye House Gatehouse famous for its association with an attempt to assassinate King Charles II. The gatehouse itself is a fine example of a brick built building of its time and is one of several medieval moated sites in Hertfordshire. The gatehouse is a Grade I listed building, it is open at weekends and bank holidays. Inside are displays detailing the history of the building and the "Rye House Plot". A winding staircase takes you to a viewing platform next to a "Barley Sugar" chimney.

Adjacent to Rye House Gatehouse is Rye House Gateway where Go Karting races and lessons take place and also Rye House Speedway where motorbikes race. There is a great pub here next to the river which do fantastic meals and have a beer garden with play equipment. Four hundred yards up the road is Rye Meads Nature Reserve with trails between different hides where you can see Kingfishers, terns, sandpipers and gadwalls. Bitterns have been seen here and do keep an eye out for otters.
