Geocache Description:

This cache introduces the geocacher to Nickerson Hill on the Nayantaquit Trail in the Nehantic State Forest in the Hamburg section of the town of Lyme. As far as I am aware, Nickerson Hill represents the highest point in the town of Lyme (452 feet), thus the name for the cache. You will find the Nayantaquit Trail Map in the image gallery helpful for orientation.

The best place to park is the lot off of the access road, Kenney Road. Enter Nehantic State Forest from Route 156, 3.8 miles north of I-95. Drive past two boat launches and a picnic area. At approximately 3.5 miles, the parking lot will be on the left. An alternate route (and much less dirt road travel), is to enter the state forest from the north. Take Route 156 to Beaver Brook Raod and follow it for 2.0 miles. Turn right onto Kenney Road and follow for 1.0 mile. Enter Nehantic State Forest; the parking lot is on the right in 0.2 miles.

I suggest doing a loop hike on the light blue blazed trail which crosses the summit of Nickerson and Brown (350') Hills. (Again, refer to the map in the gallery.) The entire hike is 3.4 miles. Stop by the second cache I have placed in the area ("Among the Ruins 2") which is also on the loop. You may want to refer to a review of this trail on the Connecticut Museum Quest website for more detailed information (visit link)

The cache is just off the highest point of the trail. A tall cedar marks this high point and you will need to head west into the woods just a bit.

Enjoy the nice hike.
