Early in the year of 1837, six leading citizens of the community—John Peck, John Lentz, Solomon Nussman, Peter Troutman, Henry Barringer, and George Culp—held a meeting in the local schoolhouse and decided to build a church in the neighborhood. Construction of the first church, located in what is now the cemetery began before the congregation was actually organized.
