Geocache Description:

OK, I realize this isn’t much of a REAL Ironman competition, but its about as close as I’ll ever get to one… And since I have been called FlagMan, NanoMan, AmmoMan, MamaMan, and countless other names, I thought maybe I should throw IronMan into the mix since I love Iron Mountain. I needed a little Sherpa training, so I looked on Google Earth, found a few trails from Perfect Sunset into a new area, made a route that looked feasible and loaded it all into my GPSr. Headed out to Iron Mountain and started at the Poway Road TH, took the lower cut-across trail toward Ellie Lane, then took the middle trail toward Brownies on the Move and Itsy Bitsy up to Perfect Sunset. Then couldn’t resist hiding one at Atlas Shrugged. From there, I glanced at my tracks and promptly ignored them as I headed down the backside towards Hansel following a steep streambed. (Note to self and others, there’s a better trail to get down here from there, or there from here…) Once I got to Hansel, I looked around for some spots to hide a cache and spotted Monkey Love. But before hiding that one, I ventured towards another nearby rockpile and stumbled across the Tanning Booth. After getting some R&R at this most comfortable spot, I headed over to Monkey Love and then made the long, uphill climb to Just One More Hill. From there, you have your choice of several trails that will either take you the long way over to Ellie Lane or the short way back to the middle trail near Itsy Bitsy, etc.

There are trails to all of these caches except the last couple hundred feet to Just One More Hill is pretty rough. But most of you out there are much better at this game than I am, so if a lame llama like me can make it I’m sure you’ll have no trouble at all. I usually find that the trails are much easier to spot on the way back from a cache than on the way to it. Weird how that works…

Of course, there is a better way to get to all these caches (except Atlas Shrugged) without going to Perfect Sunset. I’ve added an alternate TH waypoint to all except Atlas Shrugged, so you might try that. And if you want my tracks, send me an e-mail and I’ll send them back to you.

My stats for the trip were as follows:

Odometer 6.2 miles (10K)
Total ascent: 1990 feet
Total time: 3:05 hours
Stopped time: 39:48 mins

Take lots of pictures and bring the 10-essentials, of course. In the summer, it will be very hot so bring plenty of water.
