Port of Sale 13: Sale Cemetery Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Robmc: This series has been taking up prime positions around Sale for too long. Time for something new for the locals to do.
Thanks to all the cachers who have helped with maintenance of this series over the years.
Thanks, Robmc.

Geocache Description:

The Sale Cemetry is located on the Sale - Maffra Road. It has an imposing gateway with Himalayan Cedars towering over the brick and wrought iron entrance. The cemetry is designed as a Victorian "Cloverleaf", with winding pathways around the three sections for the Presbyterian, Catholic and Anglican graves.

The earliest marked grave is that of William Wood, who died in 1855.

The cache will take you on a walk of the Cloverleaf and tell you a bit about who is here.

There is a parking lot right near where the cache starts.
Please wear a hat (and Slip, Slop, Slap!) as you will be exposed to the sun.
You do not have to dig, or fiddle with any graves to find the cache.
Graveyard caches are sometimes fun to do at night, but some of the headstones are a bit difficult to read. I have given some clues in the text.

1. Angus 38 05.089 147 03.000
A trip to Sale wouldn't be the same without visiting Angus McMillian - the "Discoverer of Gippsland". He spearheaded the push down onto the Gippsland Plains, was a land holder and one time parliamentry representative for the area. All over Gippsland, streets bear his name.
He was born on the Isle of Skye in ABCD?

2. Edith 38 05.099 147 02.986
Edith's headstone is a fine and rare example of an early Victorian child's headstone.
Make sure you have the right Edith, as there are a few around here (she is next to her dad - Mr Scott)
How old was she when she took up residence here? E
This is not easy to read, but as a clue, she was born in 1862.

3. George 38 05.111 147 02.997
George was a compositor for the Herald when he first came to Victoria. In 1861 he established the Gippsland Times. It is still in publication, Gippsland's oldest newspaper.
What age did he reach? FG

4. Harry 38 05.133 147 02.978
A former local who would fly his plane to visit his mum. On leaving he would do a swoop of Sale to farewell her. He was into aerial acrobatics. He died in an air race in Melbourne when his plane tipped the wing of another. He was brought home to Sale for burial.
When? HIJK
(Make sure you get Harry not Henry)

5. John, Mary and William 38 05.117 147 02.960
These three are the earlist residents. The wooden headstones have been here for over 140 years. They are in excellent order considering the weathering they have recieved.
How many letters are in Mary's surname? L
(William is in stone now, but John and Mary are wooden originals)

6. William 38 05.057 147 02.939
Billy carked it after 9 months in Victoria and was buried in free ground (sometimes called a pauper's grave). His family sent out a memorial of slate from his native North Wales to mark the grave. This is the only example of Welsh slate in the cemetry.
He had a good Welsh surname, how many letters did it have? M

7. James 38 05.110 147 03.008
A native of Victoria, born in Harcourt, he moved to Sale and joined the Gippsland Times as a reporter. In 1908 he gained the seat of Gippsland North in the Legislative Assembly, which he held (mainly as an independant) until his death in 1938. In parliament he was described as an environmentalist, a voice crying in the wilderness. Whenever he rose to speak on soil conservation and catchment management, there was an exodus from parliament. He seemed to have spent most of his time travelling the countryside talking and teaching - imagine that, a politician talking to people!
James and Celia are together. He has an interesting middle name. How many letters in it? N

8. The Red Sales 38 05.140 147 03.008
They were an aerial display unit in the RAAF base at East Sale. They were on a training flight in 1962 when the entire formation, following their leader, crashed into a hill.
How many member are buried here? P

9. Amy 38 05.106 147 03.059
Born in Ballarat (that about all I know about her). The inscription on her headstone though, is in Welsh.
When was Amy born? RSTU
Be careful with this and really read the date!

10. The Cache.
Time to start counting:
South 38 DM.CHU
East 147 (G-T)P.(L-S)(N+C+R)E

Just before you go off looking for this 400ml Sistema cache, please remember you are in an area that is reserved for the celebration of lives past, and treat it with the reverence it deserves.

If you feel the urge to dig or move anything, don't!
Please read the clues.
